Man jailed for abuse of seven children

A 67-year-old Co Roscommon man has been sentenced to ten years in prison after he was convicted of sexually abusing seven young children at his home over a 16 year period.

Brendan Tuohy of Main Street in Castlerea was brought before a sitting of the circuit court in Roscommon today, three days after he was sentenced to four years in jail at the Central Criminal Court for sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Retired electrician Brendan Touhy pleaded guilty at Roscommon circuit court to 26 sample charges of indecent assault on seven children over a 16 year period.

The victims were all aged between ten and 15 years old at the time of the assaults which took place at his home at Main Street in Castlerea between 1970 and 1986, at which stage he was confronted about his behaviour.

Investigating officer Sergeant John Hynes told the court about a pattern of abuse and assault carried out by Touhy on the children during holiday periods while they stayed in the house and shared a bed with the 67-year-old.

He said the house was an open house where visitors regularly came, played cards and stayed over but the children were repeatedly abused during at the time of Easter, Summer Halloween and Christmas

Judge Anthony Kennedy sentenced Touhy to a series of two year custodial sentences on each of the charges, but ordered that some would run concurrently.

The Judge ordered Touhy to go to jail for 10 years .
