The funeral of the 51-year-old man, who died after being attacked at his home, has been held in west Belfast.
Frank McGreevy, a former republican prisoner, was left in critical condition following the attack at his home in Ross Street in the Falls area a week ago.
He died in hospital on Tuesday.
Mr McGreevy was found injured by his 15-year-old son, Francis. He also has another son, aged nine.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with Mr McGreevy's murder, as well as six other offences.
Mr McGreevy was buried at the City Cemetery following a service in St Peter's Cathedral.
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams was among hundreds of mourners and at one stage helped to carry the coffin, which was draped with a tricolour.
In a graveside oration, Mr Adams described Mr McGreevy as a life-long republican. He said he did not deserve to die the way he died.
Mr Adams again criticised what he said was the failure of the PSNI to respond properly to crimnality in the community.
He urged anyone with information about Mr McGreevy's killing to bring it forward.
