The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has again called for a summit of community leaders to tackle what he has called the scourge of violence in society.
Writing in this morning's Irish Independent, Dr Martin said the news now provided a 'daily litany' of murders and assaults, some presented in 'horror detail'.
Last year Dr Martin called on the government to gather an emergency summit of community leaders and gardaí to tackle gangland crime and violence.
Now he has made the call again.
Dr Martin condemns the culture of drugs, knives and violence as a 'cancerous growth' infesting Ireland.
He says society must be helped to take responsibility for the roots of violence and that people need the support of the government and gardaí.
He also renews his criticism of what he calls 'respectable' people in society, whose use of so-called recreational drugs like cocaine sanitises the violence and exploitation.
