Police in Belfast have launched a murder inquiry following the death of a man who was seriously assaulted three days ago.

Frank McGreevy, who was 51, and a former Republican prisoner, was beaten with a blunt instrument in his flat at Ross Street in west Belfast on Saturday night.

He was discovered lying in a pool of blood by his 15-year-old son.

Mr McGreevy underwent surgery for severe head injuries. He had been on a life support machine, and died today.

The PSNI have now launched a murder inquiry and say a 21-year-old man who handed himself over to police following the attack is still being questioned about the killing.

Detectives are still seeking more information about the murder, and have appealed for anybody who was in a group outside the victims flat to come forward.
