Six fire units were called to the Pharmachem chemical plant on Little Island in Cork on Sunday to deal with a chemical leak.

According to the company, the solvent spillage was caused by the over-pressurisation of a 200 litre drum.

It is understood that it happened at around 7am in a storage area at the back of the plant.

The company's own emergency crews dealt with the spill, but fire units from Cork City, Middleton and Cobh were on site to provide back-up.

It is understood that nobody was injured and the company says that there was no environmental impact.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Health and Safety Authority have been informed.

Crews will continue to clean the effected area at the plant tomorrow.
