A 19-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a man in hospital in Dublin.
A murder investigation was launched after the death of the 30-year-old, one of two men attacked by a group of teenagers on Benbulben Road in Drimnagh on Saturday night.
The second man, who is in his late 20s, is still critically ill in hospital.
Garda Supt Bart Faulkner said today the attack was a terrible crime committed not just against new members of the community but against the community itself, and which had appalled the people of Drimnagh.
A man was attacked outside the chip shop on Benbulben Road in Drimnagh on Saturday evening. He was knocked to the ground but in spite of his injuries he managed to make his way back home.
He lived in a house with four other people, two men and two women.
When he and another flatmate left the house again they were attacked by a group of teenagers.
Both men were stabbed a number of times in the head with what is believed to have been a screwdriver, although the weapon used has still not been recovered.
Both men were taken to St James's Hospital. This afternoon the 30-year-old man died. The second man remains critically ill. Both men were Polish and had been in the country for less than nine months.
Gardaí at Sundrive Road are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
