Gardaí are investigating a possible link to dissident Republicans and a criminal aspect in the killing of a 27-year-old man in Co Donegal.

The Real IRA is reported to have said it was not involved.

Andrew Burns, from Drum Road near the Lifkea Road in Strabane, Co Tyrone, was shot twice in a church car park in Doneyloop last night.

A local priest says Mr Burns had been abducted but gardaí have yet to establish a specific motive.

Local people attending an event in the youth club in Doneyloop found Mr Burns on the road near the local church at around 7.30pm last night.

Unsuccessful efforts were made to resuscitate him.

His body was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital for a post-mortem by the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy.

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Doherty visited the scene of the shooting this morning.

He described it as an absolutely horrendous murder and a tragedy for the man's family and a trauma for the community.

Mr Doherty would not comment on speculation that the Real IRA was involved in the shooting, but he said he totally condemned the murder.

Both An Garda Síochána and the PSNI are investigating and have appealed for information.
