Friends and family of US astronaut Dan Tani gathered in Blackrock Castle Observatory in Co Cork today for a live television link-up.
Mr Tani, who is married to an Irish woman, spoke to his Co Cork in-laws and nephews during the link-up, scheduled for his birthday.
His wife, Jane Egan, who is originally from Blackrock, now lives in Houston, Texas.
Mr Tani has been on the International Space Station since October and is expected to return to earth next month.
Thousands of students watched the broadcast streamed live by Nasa via the internet. Local Cork children, including Mr Tani’s nephews, were able to ask him questions.
