The Fine Gael MEP, Gay Mitchell, has urged the European Commission to clamp down on Irish criminals getting firearms training in the Czech Republic and other EU countries.
The Commission has drafted a directive dealing with the use of guns, which is currently with the Council of Ministers.
Mr Mitchell has asked the Council to amend the directive to include an obligation on the part of firing range owners to keep a register of customers that would be available to police on demand.
Mr Mitchell said it is unacceptable that criminals with, as he put it, 'murder on their mind' are able to hone their shooting skills in other EU member states.
