The Northern Ireland Policing Board has decided to bring in external expertise to assess if any new lines of inquiry could be explored in the hunt for the Omagh bombers.

To date nobody has been convicted of the 1998 atrocity which claimed the lives of 29 people and unborn twins.

Earlier the PSNI Chief Constable, Sir Hugh Orde, indicated that he is not optimistic that the perpetrators of the Omagh bombing will be caught.

Mr Orde was at a meeting of the policing board where members raised concerns about the handling of the Omagh bombing investigation.

He described the exchanges at the meeting as robust.

Mr Orde promised that he will deal with PSNI officers criticised last month by a High Court judge for 'beefing up evidence', once the police Ombudsman has reported on the matter.

The meeting was held following the acquittal of Sean Hoey on charges of the murder of the 29 people killed in the Omagh bomb including a woman pregnant with twins.
