The Taoiseach has led widespread tributes to Joe Dolan, the singer and entertainer who died yesterday afternoon at the age of 68.

A native of Mullingar, Co Westmeath, he died in the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin after becoming ill at his home on Christmas night. He had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Mr Dolan had been suffering ill-health for some time, and had been forced to cancel concerts in October.

On Christmas night he was taken to the Mater hospital after becoming seriously ill at his Dublin home.

A statement from his family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

His family and management said they have been overwhelmed with expressions of sympathy and support and have requested privacy at this time.

His remains will repose at Gilsenan's Funeral Home in Mullingar from tomorrow lunchtime.

The removal will take place to the Cathedral of Christ the King, arriving at 6.30pm tomorrow evening.

The funeral mass will take place at 11am on Saturday morning, and the singer's remains will be buried afterwards at Walshestown Cemetery.
