Ailbe Lonergan - Charged with brother's murder

A 31-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court in Tralee charged with murdering his brother.

Michael Lonergan, 34, died three hours after being stabbed in the lungs and heart on New Year's Eve last year.

He was the father of five young children.

His brother Ailbe, of 12 Quill Street in Tralee, was arrested as part of the garda investigation and charged with the murder.

Opening his trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Tralee, Denis Vaughan Buckley SC said the evidence would be that Michael Lonergan was stabbed three times and that the fatal wound had penetrated his lungs and heart.

He said there would be evidence from a witness who saw Ailbe and Michael Lonergan exchanging digs outside their home before Ailbe threw a knife onto the concrete.

A jury of nine men and three women has been sworn in for this trial.

More than 70 people are listed in the book of evidence and could be called to testify and the trial is expected to run until the end of next week.
