A murder trial in Cork has been told that a man was stabbed ten times in the neck as he sat on a sofa in his rented flat in Cork city last April.
21-year-old Keith Nagle of 15 Churchfield Green is charged with the murder of 22-year-old Gerard O'Mahony at Flat 5, 3 Parkview, Wellington Road in Cork.
Mr Nagle had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, not murder, this morning. However, prosecution Senior Counsel Tom Creed said the plea was not acceptable to the DPP.
Tom Creed SC told the jury of seven men and five women that Gerard O'Mahony bled to death having been stabbed from behind by Keith Nagle.
The court was told there were no defensive wounds on Gerard O'Mahony.
Mr Creed said that the deceased had been seen minutes before midnight the previous night buying drink at an off-licence in St Luke's with the accused man.
The jury was told that Mr O'Mahony's flatmate arrived back to the flat on the morning of April 22 2006, and found his friend sitting slumped over the side of the couch and he could not get him to respond.
