Two men are still in a coma in Waterford Regional Hospital following a party at a house in the Ballybeg estate in the city early yesterday morning.

Gardaí have confirmed that the cocaine found in the Ballybeg estate following the party did not contain any other substance, which may have caused the men to fall critically ill.

John Grey, 23, from Ballybeg and 21-year-old Kevin Doyle from Viewmount in Waterford city have been in a coma since being admitted to the intensive care unit early yesterday morning.

Mr Doyle had only recently been battling testicular cancer and was given the all clear in the past fortnight. As a result, his immune system was very low, which relatives believe could be the main reason why his body reacted in the way it did.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Superintendent Dave Sheehan confirmed nothing of a toxic nature had been discovered in the substance, saying it was possible that those involved had taken an overdose.

However, he confirmed that the substance did not contain horse tranquiliser.

The Garda National Drugs Unit has said there is no quality control when it comes to drugs and that users do not know what the ingredients are before they take them.

Superintendent Barry O'Brien said the incident was not the first time that people became ill after taking what they believed was cocaine.

Gardaí and five ambulance crews attended the scene in Waterford in the early hours of Sunday morning when a number of partygoers became violently ill 15 people were subsequently examined at the local hospital.

A 25-year-old man who was arrested at the party remains in custody in connection with the incident.

He is being questioned at Tramore Garda Station and can be held for up to seven days.
