A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of a man's body in the Southill area of Limerick this morning.

The man has been named as 19-year-old Jeffrey Hannon from Southill.

His body was found at around 10.30am by a local resident, who was walking along in Galtee Drive in the O'Malley Park estate.

It is understood Mr Hannon was seen chatting with friends in the area last night, but his whereabouts after about 2.30am are unknown.

He had a number of injuries to his body and gardaí believe he died violently.

A murder investigation has now been launched by a team based at the city's Roxboro Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post mortem tonight.
