Bus dispute for talks tomorrow

SIPTU has accepted an invitation to talks on the Dublin Bus dispute tomorrow morning at the Labour Court.

The invitation was issued by Kevin Duffy, Chairman of the Labour Court.

'The speedy intervention of Mr Duffy is very much to be welcomed,' said SIPTU Branch Organiser Willie Noone.

'We have accepted the invitation and would urge all the other parties to do so as well. This dispute needs to be resolved quickly in the interests of the general public as well as our members in Harristown.'

The National Bus and Rail Workers' Union had earlier written to Dublin Bus proposing that they make a joint referral to the Labour Court in a bid to resolve the current dispute which has paralysed bus services in north and west Dublin.

In his letter to management, NBRU General Secretary Michael Faherty warned of the real risk that the dispute could escalate into an unofficial stoppage involving other Dublin garages.

He urges the company to suspend introduction of the disputed routes to allow a joint referral to the Labour Court for a full investigation of the company's proposals.

And he says that should include a full examination of his members' fears about working conditions being eroded.

He says this would allow members back to work and prevent further inconvenience for passengers.

Around 60,000 Dublin Bus passengers are suffering a second day of transport disruption because of the Harristown dispute.

The row over where drivers start, break and finish their shift led to the suspension of one driver and pickets on the north Dublin garage.

Drivers argued that new routes will lengthen their working week by up to three hours - a claim disputed by management.

Meanwhile, drivers at Harristown are organising a protest march tomorrow morning at 11am from the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square to the Dublin Bus headquarters in O'Connell Street.

Organiser Owen McCormack said that Harristown drivers were not calling on drivers from other depots to walk off the job to join the protest.

However, he could not predict what individual drivers would choose to do.
