A court in Belfast has remanded a man in custody charged in relation to an attack, which led to the murder of a Belfast schoolboy two years ago.

24-year-old Nigel Brown from Newtownabbey is accused of attempted grievous bodily harm on a friend of 15-year-old Thomas Devlin.

Mr Devlin was stabbed close to his home in August 2005.

Mr Brown was arrested last Friday by detectives investigating the stabbing of Mr Devlin in August 2005.

He was among seven people questioned over the weekend as part of the hunt for the killer of the schoolboy, who was attacked as he and two friends walked home after buying sweets.

Six of those held were released pending reports, but Mr Brown was charged over the attack on Jonathan McKee, a friend of Thomas, who also suffered knife injuries.

It was claimed by a prosecution lawyer that Mr Brown had a stick or club with him on the evening of the attack, which he allegedly used to hit Jonathan McKee on the head.

Bail was opposed by the PSNI because of the strong tensions still surrounding the murder, which is believed to have been sectarian.

Concerns that Mr Brown might interfere with witnesses were also expressed.

The magistrate said he was satisfied there would be a risk to the defendant should he be allowed out on bail and a risk in general that this could give rise to further offences occurring.

Mr Brown will appear again via video link in four-weeks time.

No one has yet been charged with Mr Devlin's murder.
