A 27-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Galway charged with the murder of 17-year-old Swiss student Manuela Riedo.
Gerald Barry, of Rosan Glas in Rahoon Co Galway, was charged with murdering Ms Riedo near Lough Atalia in Renmore, on 8 October.
Free legal aid was granted and Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mr Barry in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear again at a sitting of the District Court at Harristown House next Friday.
Ms Riedo's funeral took place in her home village of Hinterkappelen near Bern in Switzerland today.
The Irish ambassador to Switzerland, James Sharkey, represented the Government at today's service while the Mayor of Galway, Tom Costello, also attended.
Flags, including the Swiss flag, flew at half mast at Galway city hall today as a sign of respect.
The body of the 17-year-old Student was found near Lough Atalia on 9 October. A post mortem examination found that Ms Riedo, who had been staying in Renmore for only two days, had been strangled.
Last night, a 26-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were released without charge from garda stations in Gort and Loughrea. A file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
