Swiss student's body flown home

Manuela Riedo - Appeal for information
Manuela Riedo - Appeal for information

The body of 17-year-old Manuela Riedo, who was strangled in Galway last week, has been flown back to Switzerland.

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses in the ongoing investigation into her murder.

The Swiss student was found strangled on wasteland near Ceannt Railway Station in the city on 9 October.

Her remains were taken on a Dublin to Zurich flight this afternoon. From there her parents accompanied the body to their home village 16km south of Bern.

Her funeral is expected to take place on Thursday.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Galway say the public response to their appeal for information in relation to her murder has been very good.

But they want more people who were using the shortcut between Renmore and Ceannt Railway Station at the same time as Manuela Riedo to come forward.

The critical period is between 7.15pm and 8pm on 8 October, Monday night of last week.

People in the area at that time are urged to make contact with gardaí so that they can be eliminated from the investigation.

They would also like to hear from anyone who may have noticed a change in the behaviour of people they know.

Such changes may include an increase in the consumption of alcohol or drugs, absenteeism from work, appearing unusually nervous or anxious, and finally, attempting to change their appearance by cutting their hair or shaving off facial hair.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room in Mill Street Garda Station or any garda station.
