Gardaí investigating the murder of a 17-year-old Swiss student in Galway have said students in the city should take precautions to ensure their safety when going out.

The body of Manuela Riedo was found in the city yesterday. She had been strangled.

The host family from Renmore Park, with whom she had been staying, say they last saw her when she went out between 7pm and 7.30pm on Monday evening.

Gardaí are examining CCTV from locations in the city and have appealed for information from the public.

Ms Riedo had arrived in Ireland last Saturday to take up an English studies course.

Her body was discovered on waste ground near the railway line over Lough Atalia at 9.30am yesterday morning.

Her family is flying to Ireland from their home near Bern in Switzerland.

Ms Reido was 5'4" tall, with brown shoulder length hair. When last seen she wore calf length black suede boots, a grey sleeved top with narrow pink stripes and a red and black cardigan which had two black sleeves and a diamond black shape on the back.

She was also wearing a waist length ladies wool coat, grey and black herringbone and grey jeans.

The 17-year-old was carrying a distinctive large black handbag with a cherry pattern with green leaves. She had a small diamond stud in the left side of her nose and wore a silver ban on her middle finger.

The student was also known to have been out on Sunday night in the Kings Head pub in Shop Street in Galway and gardaí say they will be examining CCTV footage from various locations in the city from Sunday and Monday nights.

Gardaí have appealed for information from anyone who may have seen Manuela on Sunday or Monday night or anyone who saw anything suspicious on Monday night or Tuesday morning in the vicinity of Ceannt Railway and Bus station.

It is understood Ms Riedo died from asphyxiation but gardaí are giving no further details to relation to any other injuries she may have suffered.
