Irish Sugar has been fined €100,000 after it pleaded guilty to two charges regarding safety matters at its plant on the outskirts of Carlow town.
In October 2000, an evaporator vessel on site exploded and sprayed hot liquid over two employees. One of those employees, 21-year-old Kieran Cullinane, subsequently died.
The company pleaded guilty at Carlow Circuit Court to one charge of failing to keep proper records and another of failing to properly identify the hazards and risks associated with the vessel which exploded.
Kevin Walsh, the man who survived the accident, described the amount of money which the company was fined as a joke.
