A 20-year-old man has died in hospital following an assault in Limerick city last week.

Mateusz Sabik, originally from Poland but with an address on Alphonsus Street in Limerick, was injured in an altercation on Ellen Street on 29 September.

It was thought initially that his injures were not serious, but his condition deteriorated over the weekend and he died last night.

A post mortem is being carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Michael Curtis, today.

Gardaí have arrested two men in relation to the assault on Mr Sabik.
