The jury in the inquest into the deaths of two men during a failed post office robbery in Lusk in 2005 has returned its verdict.

It found that Eric Hopkins and Colm Griffin were shot dead by gardaí during an attempted armed robbery at the post office following repeated warnings from gardaí.

The jury found that Colin Griffin was shot in the head and body while he was in a firing position. It also found that Eric Hopkins was shot through the heart. He was not armed but was believed to be carrying a gun.

The jury made no recommendations following the verdict.

The jury was considering evidence surrounding the circumstances of the deaths of the two men during the raid attempt.

As the Coroner began to address the families of Colin Griffin and Eric Hopkins, some of them left the court and shouted at gardaí as they exited.

The jury had been given the option of a narrative verdict and could have brought in a rider as long as it did not blame or exonerate anyone.

The jury's deliberations resumed earlier today after being suspended due to the Garda Ombudsman's attempt to halt the inquest. The Ombudsman had received a complaint about the death of Eric Hopkins.

The family of Colm Griffin has criticised garda actions on that day and said the armed robbers should have been stopped before they got into the post office.
