Man released after Derry disturbance

Police in Derry have released the 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the street disturbances in the Shipquay Street area of the city in the early hours of this morning.

A large crowd clashed with police at around 2am this morning.

A number of officers received minor injuries, and a police vehicle was damaged.

Calm was restored by 4am.

The PSNI say they no longer believe that shops were damaged during the incident.

Sinn Féin Assembly member, Martina Anderson, has called for the Police Ombudsman's Office to investigate the disturbances.

She said the common belief was that a relatively minor scuffle between two individuals spiralled out of control following the intervention of a large number of PSNI personnel.
