A US university remains shut down as police hunt for a man believed to have shot and wounded two students in the early hours of this morning.

Police in the east coast city of Dover said they were searching for a person of interest at Delaware State University after the shooting around near the Memorial Hall on the university campus.

A male student and a female student, both aged 17, at the largely African-American university were sent to hospital for treatment, the woman remained in serious condition.

University police chief James Overton said approximately 4-6  shots were fired at a group of eight to 10 students on the campus.

One shot struck the male student, while two shots hit the woman.

The university implemented a shut down plan to provide essential services to the campus and students were directed to  remain in their residence halls for their safety as the gun man was sought.

The shooting evoked fears of a repeat of the massacre of 32  people by a student at Virginia Tech University in April. That ended with the gunman killing himself.
