A 32-year-old man has been charged with three offences under British anti-terrorism laws.

Raingzieb Ahmed, from the Fallowfield area of Manchester, was arrested by Greater Manchester Police's Counter-Terrorism Unit on 10 September.

A police spokeswoman said he was formally charged last night and would appear before magistrates in central London today.

He is accused of directing the activities of an organisation concerned in the commission of acts of terrorism between 22 April and 24 August last year. The organisation was not identified.

It is also alleged that between the same dates he had in his possession documents, namely three books, containing information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

A third accusation is that he had a rucksack containing traces of explosives in circumstances which give rise to reasonable suspicion that possession of it was for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.
