Gardaí have confirmed that the cannabis recovered in the sea off the Aran Islands has an estimated street value of €1.8m.
261kg of the drug was recovered in a number of field packages after becoming entangled in the nets of an Irish fishing trawler operating 100km west of the islands yesterday afternoon.
The Naval Service is continuing to search the area where the drug was found.
The packages recovered so far were brought ashore today for a technical examination.
The drugs were transferred to a Customs boat early this morning and were landed in Ros a' Mhíl in Co Galway before lunchtime.
