Gardaí in Longford have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of a woman's body in the town last night.

The mother of two's body was found at around nine o'clock last night in a vacant house on Great Water Street.

Gardaí found the body of a woman in a downstairs bathroom.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who saw the woman with black hair and a black tracksuit with white stripes down the side to contact them.

The victim was around 5' 02" in height.

She has been named locally as Sharon Coughlan who was well known in Longford Town and had worked for many years in a local pub.

An initial examination of the house was conducted last night and a detailed forensic examination of the scene took place today.

A post mortem on the woman's body took place at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have seen her or anyone acting suspiciously in the St. Mels Road, Water Street or Templemichael Terrace area yesterday evening or last night to contact them on 043-50570.
