Gardaí investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident in Co Clare have arrested three people and recovered a car fitting the description of the vehicle involved.

89-year-old John Cooney died after he was struck by a car as he returned to his own vehicle in Ogonnelloe in Killaloe last night.

A search is continuing for the driver.

Mr Cooney, a retired farmer, was hit as he returned to his car after attending 8pm mass in the village and died at the scene.

A car matching the description of the vehicle involved in the incident has been found burnt out in the Scarriff area.

Gardaí are carrying out a technical examination on the car.

The Killaloe to Scarriff road is blocked at Ogonelloe and diversions are in place until further notice.

Superintendent Tony Kennelly from Killaloe Garda station is appealing for witnesses to the incident.

The three men arrested are still in custody.
