A memorial service to remember victims of murder or manslaughter in Ireland has taken place at St Anne's Church in Dublin.

The Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan attended the service and said every homicide was one too many.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show a significant increase in violent crime over the past year.

The homicide rate for 2006 was 66, the highest figure in the history of the State and an increase of 6.5% on 2005.
