A 28-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Tullamore charged in connection with the death of a man in Co Westmeath on Thursday morning.

John Mooney, with an address at Trim Road, Summerhill, Co Meath, was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Thomas Canning at Lough Lene, Collinstown on 30 August.

There was no application for bail and Judge William Early remanded him in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on 6 September. 

Thomas Canning was found dead in a campervan at Lough Lene in Collinstown, Co Westmeath early on Thursday morning.

A post mortem revealed that the 42-year-old, from Summerhill in Co Meath, had died from internal injuries caused by blunt force.
