Forest fires raging across southern Greece have reached the village of Olympia adjacent to the ancient ruins.

The fires in the Peloponnese peninsula and the Aegean island of Euboea northeast of Athens have so far killed 56 people.

A 65-year-old man has been charged with arson after the worst forest fires in Greece for decades.

He is accused of arson and multiple counts of homicide over a blaze in the Peloponnese town of Areopolis that killed six people.

In the northern city of Kavala, two youths have been detained on suspicion of arson.

France is leading international help in the fight to control the fires, with Russia and the US providing additional support.

EU and Mediterranean countries have so far offered 14 planes and 10 helicopters to help fight the forest blazes.

For the first time in more than 50 years, Greece has suffered three successive heatwaves this summer with temperatures peaking in June and July at a record 46C.
