Durango - Two police officers injured
Durango - Two police officers injured

Two police officers have been wounded in a bomb blast in the Basque region of Spain.

Police said the incident appeared to be the first bombing by ETA since they ended a ceasefire in June.

The device, which had been placed in a van parked outside a police barracks in the town of Durango, caused considerable damage to the building. The two police officers were hit by flying glass.

A second vehicle, believed by police to have been used by the bombers to flee the scene, exploded in the town of Amorebieta about an hour later.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

For weeks the Spanish government has warned of an imminent ETA attack after the arrests of members of the Basque militant group and the seizure of explosives.

ETA called off a 15-month-old ceasefire on 5 June.
