The man serving a life sentence for the murder of BBC television presenter Jill Dando has been refused bail.

Barry George was jailed for life in 2001 for Jill Dando's murder and is awaiting his second appeal against conviction.

The case was referred to Britain's Court of Appeal after doubts were raised about firearms evidence given at his original trial.

The judge said he was denying bail because it was not clear if the appeal would be successful.

Prosecutors say they will fight any appeal and are maintaining the conviction was safe.

George, who has always protested his innocence, was convicted and jailed two years after Ms Dando was shot dead on the doorstep of her home in April 1999.

The investigation into the murder of the 37-year-old set off one of the Metropolitan Police's largest investigations, in which a vast range of theories was examined.

Barry George lost his first appeal in December 2002 before Britain's highest judges, the Law Lords.

But doubts have since been raised about a microscopic particle taken from his coat, which some experts say may not have come from a gun, as was claimed in his original trial.

The appeal is due to be heard in November.
