Communications regulator ComReg says the three main mobile phone operators have pledged to cut their termination rates in each of the next five years, in a move which should benefit consumers.
The termination rate is a wholesale charge levied by mobile companies on each other for calls coming from another network.
ComReg said the voluntary agreement, by Vodafone, O2 and Meteor, will result in savings of around €15m across the market in the first year, rising gradually to up to €100m a year.
These benefits should result in lower charges to customers as they are passed on by the mobile operators.
