Nine people have been arrested in Tallaght as part of an ongoing operation by the Special Detective Unit charged with investigating subversives.

The eight men and one woman, who range in age from 19 to 43 years, were arrested during a search of a house at Cushlawn Drive yesterday evening.

It is understood that a member of the INLA who was recently released from prison and was under investigation was arrested at the scene.

This man is suspected of being behind an attack in the Coombe at the end of June when 100 people had to be evacuated from their homes after a hand grenade exploded in the area.

The man is also under investigation by a special Garda team  which was set up to investigate the increasing number of bomb attacks and use of explosives in Dublin and Limerick.

It is understood that when members of the Emergency Response Unit raided the house in Tallaght, they found a man who they believed was being held captive.

When officers entered the house, they found the man stripped naked and they believe he was being interrogated.

The nine are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act at various garda stations.

A technical examination of the house is ongoing.
