Two teenagers have been arrested by police investigating the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in south Belfast early this morning.

Police in Belfast are investigating an incident early this morning in which a 16-year-old girl was attacked and sexually assaulted as she waited for a taxi.

The girl was waiting in the car park of a pub at Finaghy in south Belfast at about 1.30am when the PSNI say she was attacked by two men.

Police said the girl had been severely traumatised by her ordeal and appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious to contact them.

The girl is believed to have managed to break free from her attackers at one point and ran off but was caught again.

The nearby rail station had been closed to passengers seeking to travel to Belfast while a forensic examination is carried out, but it has now reopened.

SDLP South Belfast Assembly member Carmel Hanna said the assault was absolutely appalling.

'This will have devastating personal consequences for this young woman - she probably thought she was perfectly safe and indeed she should have been, standing waiting for a taxi,' Ms Hanna said.

She expressed her sympathies to the young girl and her family.
