The head of the childcare learning centre at the Institute of Technology in Athlone has resigned from his job after it emerged he has been convicted of a sex offence with a girl in Holland in 2005.
40-year-old Niall McElwee was head of the centre for child and youth care learning at Athlone IT but was convicted of carrying out the offence in Amsterdam in June 2004.
It is understood the IT only became aware of the offence in the last seven days.
