Bonfires will be lit in loyalist areas of Northern Ireland tonight as part of the 11th night celebrations.

Bonfires are a major part of the 11th night and many like the one on the Ballycraigy estate in Antrim Town has been planned since Easter.  It is about the height of two houses.

Despite the concerns over possible environmental hazards, thousands of tyres have been used in the structure.

One member of the Northern Assembly has said tough targets for carbon emissions should be attached to funding for bonfires and other community festivals.

Patsy McGlone, chairman of the Stormont Environment Committee, was speaking amid concerns for residents living close to the Ballycraigy pyre.

In Belfast, the Orange Order is making the traditional fires part of a new-style festival for 12 July.

The traditonal parade and bonfires are being incorporated into an Orange Festival, as the Order attempts to present a new image for locals and visitors to Belfast.

And in Antrim, a short distance from Ballycraigy on the Steeple estate, a street party will be held. A bonfire has been replaced with a smaller fire, with no tyres.
