The head of US forces in Iraq, Lieutenant General David Petraeus, has said fighting the insurgency is a 'long-term endeavour' that could take decades.
He warned that US forces were engaged in a 'tough fight' which will get 'harder before it gets easier'. He also said the recent surge in troops was achieving progress.
His comments come as calls for a withdrawal of US from Iraq strengthen.
