Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin will spend €2.45 million to research the development of television, music and other services for Irish mobile phones.

23 telecommunications companies will work with researchers from third level institutions on the Next Generation Project, which will focus on the emerging Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem or IMS technology.

Mr Martin said that now that consumers and business have embraced mobile phone technology, it was time to look to the future.
