Cocaine Haul - Three men remain in custody

Two men are due to appear at Skibbereen District Court tomorrow morning charged in connection with the seizure of cocaine in the area on 2 July.

The two men, who have been detained for questioning at Bandon Garda Station since their arrest last Wednesday, were brought under armed guard to a special sitting of Clonakilty District Court last night.

Judge James McNulty was told that gardaí needed the maximum time remaining under the Misuse of Drugs Act to question the two men.  At the hearing, Judge McNulty granted investigators an additional 47-hours to question the men.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Ludlow said they were waiting on forensic results from the examination of a 07 Dublin registered Volkswagen Passat linked to one of the men, and items in it, including passports and codes, described as 'complex and cryptic'.

Gardaí are also awaiting the results of tests on the catamaran the 'Lucky Day', detained in northern Spain, and the outcome of interviews with the two men in custody there.

The court heard that there are a team of 10 people viewing CCTV footage from 36 different sources.

A helicopter has been used to bring exhibits to Dublin to the Garda Forensic Unit for immediate analysis.

Another man still remains in custody at Bantry Garda Station.

Meanwhile, the sea search for any stray bales of cocaine in the Dunlough Bay area of Co Cork has ended.

The team of navy divers who did finally get to search in the area over the weekend were stood down this afternoon.

During that search, they did find some debris from the rigid inflatable boat (RIB) that was sent to Dublin for forensic analysis.

But after diving this morning, without finding anything, the team of eight has returned to base at Haulbowline.
