A 22-year-old father of two has been given a four year sentence with two years suspended for his role in the riots on the day of the Love Ulster march in Dublin last year.

Earlier this month, Dean Heapes from Clanranald Road in Donnycarney, pleaded guilty to setting fire to two Mercedes cars at Leinster Street in Dublin on 25 February last year.

The 22-year-old milkman also admitted to burglary at the Foot Locker shop on O'Connell Street and to violent disorder on Lower O'Connell Street on the same date.

All four cimes took place during the riots on the afternoon of the Love Ulster March.

Passing sentence, Judge Frank O'Donnell described Mr Heapes' actions throughout that day as 'opportunistic'.

They involved conduct 'which could not be tolerated in any civilised society', he said.

The judge noted Mr Heapes payment of €10,000 in compensation for the damage caused, as well as the fact he suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder.

He also referred to Mr Heapes' previous conviction for theft and the fact he had been disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He sentenced Mr Heapes to a total of four years in jail, with the last two years suspended.
