Figures from the Communications Regulator show that the first three months of this year was the strongest period so far for broadband growth.

ComReg's quarterly report said there were 602,000 broadband subscribers at the end of March, with 84,000 added in the three months between January and March.

The number of broadband internet subscriptions is now ahead of dial-up and flat-rate for the first time.

The broadband penetration rate is now 14.2%, up from 12.5% in December but still below the OECD average of 16.9%.

The report also shows that Eircom's share of the fixed-line phone market dropped to 70%, six points down on the same period a year earlier.

There were 4.7 million mobile phone subscribers, representing 112% of the population.

ComReg for the first time calculated the average time spent on mobile phones, which amounted to 223 minutes a month per customer.

Monthly average revenue per user - the average bill paid by customers - was €44.48 during the period, down 5% since the last quarter but the highest of the 14 EU states monitored.

In total, Vodafone now has 46.9% of the market, O2 has 35.2% and Meteor 17.9%.

Meteor has gained at the expense of the other two since December.
