Mary Harney is to stay on as leader of the Progressive Democrats at least until autumn.
A meeting of the party's National Executive this evening decided that a committee would look at the procedures for electing a new leader and would meet again in September.
Party President Tom Parlon said while the PDs had been bruised by the election they would have a new perspective by then.
Speaking on his way into a meeting, Senator Tom Morrissey said he hopes there will be a leadership contest in the Progressive Democrats.
The executive discussed whether to change the rules to allow party members who are not TDs or Senators to become leader.
Earlier, former Progressive Democrats TD Liz O'Donnell confirmed that she will not be a candidate for the leadership of the party, leaving the current party president, Tom Parlon, as the favourite to take over the position.
She is currently the Deputy Leader.
Health Minister, Mary Harney, took over the leadership on a temporary basis after the election defeat of Michael McDowell.
However, she has indicated that neither she nor the other PD TD, Noel Grealish, are interested in serving in the position in the long-term.
