Gardaí say one person was arrested in Ireland as part of the British investigation into an international child pornography network involving several hundred people.

UK police broke up the ring after tracing a pornographic website to Britain.

In a statement issued this evening, gardaí said they launched investigations as a result of intelligence information received from UK law enforcement agencies. A number of searches took place and one man was arrested.

Gardaí said they could not release any information relating to that arrest because further investigations of a highly sensitive nature are ongoing.

The PSNI says it has also made arrests, and that files were prepared and sent to the Public Prosecutions Service. One man has been charged and remanded in custody and a trial is pending.

Earlier today, a 27-year-old man who ran the internet chatroom, which was used by paedophiles around the world, was given an indeterminate jail term at Ipswich Crown Court.

Timothy Cox of Buxhall, Suffolk, admitted possessing and distributing tens of thousands of indecent images of children.

The chatroom, called 'Kids the Light of Our Lives', was used by paedophiles to exchange images and videos of children being abused.

More than 30 children have been rescued from possible abuse following the shutting down of the international paedophile ring.

The investigation involved law enforcement agencies from 35 countries and was led by the London-based Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre.

More than 700 suspects have been investigated.
