Gardaí have confirmed that the man found dead in Carlow today died as a result of an assault.

The body of 61-year-old Michael Murray was discovered just after 8am by a priest at the entrance to the local Presbytery on the Old Dublin Road.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post mortem examination today.

Two locations in the town have been sealed off by gardaí.

Mr Murray was originally from Athy, but it is believed he was residing in the St Vincent de Paul hostel in the town, which is close to the Presbytery.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Old Dublin Road area in the early hours of this morning and who may have witnessed anything to contact them at Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620.
