President McAleese travelled to Belgium today to attend the 90th anniversary of a World War I battle.
The commemoration at Messines Ridge acknowledges the efforts of the 16th Irish Division and the 36th Ulster Division who fought and died when taking the German-occupied Flemish town of Wijtschaete on 7 June 1917.
President McAleese unveiled a a peace tower at Messines in 1998.
