A 26-year-old man appeared at Carlow District Court this morning in connection with a robbery in Co Kilkenny in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Patrick McInerney, with an address in the Heath, Portlaoise, was charged with stealing stainless steel and copper wire, valued at €4,000, from the Glanbia plant in Ballyragget.

Sergeant Peter McConnon of Castlecomer Garda Station said he formally charged Mr McInerney last night at 11.40pm in Kilkenny Garda Station.

The court was told that the incident was 'a very serious matter' and that more serious charges may be following.

Defending solicitor Michael Lanigan applied for legal aid on behalf of his client. He also applied for bail.

The judge granted bail in Mr McInerney's own bond of €5,000 and an independent surety of €3,000. He adjourned the case to Carlow District Court until 13 June.
