The parents of the four-year-old British toddler, Madeleine McCann, have had a brief meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican.

After the weekly General Audience in St Peter's Square in Rome, Gerry and Kate McCann were among a group of people to be presented to the Pontiff.

During the meeting they handed over a photograph of their daughter Madeleine.

Earlier, they said they had mixed emotions about the meeting. They said they were nervous because it was one of the best chances of spreading the message about their daughter.

The couple are also due to visit Spain, the Netherlands, Morocco and Germany to raise awareness of their daughter.

Madeleine was abducted from the family's holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on 3 May.

Police in Portugal are looking for a 1.74m (5'7'') white man of medium build and aged between 35 and 40.

He was seen in the Praia da Luz area around the time of Madeleine's disappearance.

While the case of Madeleine McCann remains very much in the media spotlight, the stories of hundreds of missing children from around the world are forgotten. Read that report prepared by RTÉ.ie journalist Patricia O'Callaghan here
